Specialties
What people bring me, and how I work with it.
Eight areas I return to most often with adults across North Carolina. They overlap in practice, because people are not filed under one heading.
How to Use This
Start where it is loudest.
Most people arrive naming one thing and find two others underneath it. Anxiety turns out to be grief with nowhere to go. Burnout turns out to be a question about meaning that has been waiting a decade for an answer.
So read whichever page describes your week most accurately and do not worry about choosing correctly. We sort that out together in the first conversation, and the method follows the person rather than the label. You can see how that works on the approach I take in a session.
I do not treat addictions or eating disorders. If either is the primary concern, I will refer you to someone who specializes in it rather than work at the edge of my competence.
Areas of Focus
Twelve places to begin.
- Therapy for meaning, purpose and midlife
Existential grief, questioning, and the disorientation that arrives when the goals run out.
- Therapy for anxiety
Chronic vigilance, racing thought, thin sleep, the low hum underneath a competent exterior.
- Therapy for depression
Flatness and the loss of appetite for things you used to want, approached with patience rather than urgency.
- Therapy for grief and loss
Separation, death, retirement, the end of a career or an identity. Something to move through rather than get over.
- Therapy for trauma and PTSD
Older material that still shapes the present, worked slowly and never faster than you have said yes to.
- Therapy for stress, burnout and life transitions
The cost of holding a demanding life together for a long time, and what a real change of direction asks of you.
- Counseling for ADHD
Attention that does not run on the schedule everyone around you seems to keep.
- Counseling for relationship difficulties
The same argument, the long silence, and what you are actually doing in the room.
- Counseling for insomnia and sleep
When the day ends but vigilance, unfinished thought, and the effort to force rest continue.
- Counseling for anger and irritability
Understanding what anger protects, how the pattern begins, and the impact it has on others.
- Counseling for self-esteem and identity
When worth depends on achievement, approval, usefulness, or a role that no longer fits.
- Counseling for chronic illness and health changes
The emotional, relational, and identity changes that can accompany a changing body.
Who I Help
Two groups I am most at home with.
- Counseling for professional artists
For people whose work is creative expression, and for whom the pressure and the practice are hard to separate.
- Counseling for athletes
For people who train and compete, and who carry the demands of performance into the rest of their lives.
