When your body changes the terms of daily life.

Chronic illness and health changes can affect identity, relationships, work, independence, and the shape of the future. The emotional life of that change matters.

A Changed Daily Life

The practical and personal arrive together.

A health change can reorganize an ordinary day around symptoms, appointments, medication, uncertainty, and energy that can no longer be assumed. Tasks that once happened without thought may now require planning, recovery, or help from someone else.

The change is not only logistical. Work, intimacy, independence, confidence, and a familiar sense of self may all be affected. Other people may focus on test results or treatment plans while you are trying to understand what the change means for the life around them.

Chronic illness can also be inconsistent. A day that looks manageable to someone else may carry a private cost. Unpredictability makes commitments difficult and can leave you explaining, canceling, or wondering whether others believe what they cannot see.

Grief and Uncertainty

There may be no clean before and after.

Health changes often include grief for capacity, spontaneity, plans, or the body you trusted without thinking. That grief may recur as circumstances change. It does not follow a schedule and does not become illegitimate because someone else has a more serious diagnosis.

Uncertainty has its own strain. Waiting for information, watching symptoms, or wondering what will change next can keep the nervous system alert. Reassurance may help briefly without answering the larger question of how to live when certainty is unavailable.

Relationships may shift as well. Receiving care can bring gratitude and discomfort. A partner or family member may become protective, impatient, frightened, or tired. Counseling gives your experience a place without requiring a loved one to carry every part of it.

How We Work

Counseling alongside medical care, not instead of it.

I do not provide medical diagnosis, treatment, or advice. This work attends to the emotional, relational, and existential effects of illness and health change. You can continue working with physicians and other health professionals while we focus on what the experience asks of you.

Mindfulness can support accurate attention to the present without insisting that symptoms are only a matter of attitude. Cognitive approaches can examine catastrophic predictions, self-blame, or standards inherited from a healthier period. Dialogue can address grief, dependence, anger, and identity plainly.

The aim is not to promise acceptance, symptom reduction, or a particular medical outcome. It is to make room for the whole person living through the change, including the parts that are frightened, practical, hopeful, exhausted, or still unsure what to call it.

We can also talk about conversations with family, colleagues, and care teams, especially when you are tired of explaining or unsure how much to disclose. The goal is not a perfect script, but language that reflects your actual limits and priorities.

Practical Details

Telehealth for adults located in North Carolina.

I have 50 years of clinical practice. Sessions are 60 minutes by secure video and cost $180. Appointments are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, with booking through Headway.

I am licensed only in North Carolina. You must be physically present in North Carolina during each session. The practice is telehealth only, with no medical office, clinic address, local phone, home visits, or in-person service.

I do not treat addictions or eating disorders. If either is the primary concern, I refer to a specialist. During a consultation, we can discuss accessibility, privacy, other care you receive, and whether video counseling is practical for your current circumstances.
