Who I Help

For the person nobody remembers to ask about.

Caring for a parent, partner, or adult child can be loving, necessary, exhausting, and lonely. Those truths can exist together.

The Invisible Work

Care takes more than the tasks anyone sees.

Caregiving may include appointments, medication lists, transportation, meals, paperwork, finances, and the constant calculation of what might happen next. Even when another person helps, you may remain the one who holds the whole picture in mind.

The emotional work is less visible. You manage someone else’s fear, frustration, dependence, or grief while trying not to add your own needs to the room. Friends ask how the person you care for is doing, and the conversation ends before anyone asks about you.

You may have chosen the role with love and still feel trapped by it. You may resent the interruption and then feel guilty for the resentment. Counseling makes room for the full experience without asking you to prove that you are grateful, generous, or tired enough.

Exhaustion and Guilt

Rest can feel like abandonment.

Caregiver exhaustion is not always solved by an afternoon off. The mind may remain alert to messages, falls, missed doses, changing moods, or the next medical decision. Sleep becomes shallow because responsibility does not observe office hours.

Guilt can attach itself to nearly every option. You may feel guilty for wanting distance, for living farther away, for losing patience, for considering outside help, or for wondering how long the situation will continue. The standard becomes impossible and still feels binding.

Your other relationships may narrow. A partner may receive what energy remains. Work may become either an added burden or the only place where you still feel recognizable. The person you were before caregiving can seem difficult to locate.

How We Work

A place where your needs are not secondary.

We begin with what is most immediate: the decision you cannot make, the anger you do not want to admit, the grief that begins before a death, or the body that has been running without recovery. The session does not need to become another duty performed well.

Mindfulness can help distinguish what is happening now from the next ten feared possibilities. Cognitive work can examine rules about obligation and worth. Direct conversation can make room for boundaries, family conflict, and choices that do not have a clean or painless answer.

Counseling cannot remove the practical demands or promise that a family system will become fair. It can give your own experience sustained attention and help you hear what fatigue, anger, love, and grief are each trying to say.

We can also consider what support is actually available, what you have assumed must remain yours alone, and where a modest boundary may be more realistic than a complete solution. The work respects both your commitments and your limits.

Practical Details

An hour that belongs to you.

I have 50 years of clinical practice. Sessions are 60 minutes by secure video and cost $180. Availability is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and appointments are booked through Headway.

I am licensed only in North Carolina, and you must be physically located in North Carolina during the session. The practice is fully telehealth, with no office, street address, local phone, or in-person caregiver service.

I do not treat addictions or eating disorders. If either is the primary concern, I will refer you to specialized care. The free consultation can help us consider fit and find out whether the available schedule can work around the realities of caregiving.
