The Five Core Pillars
Mindful Presence & Nervous System Regulation
Learning to sit with what is here without immediately needing to change it. Most people find this uncomfortable for about three weeks and indispensable after that.
What It Is
Not relaxation. Attention.
Meditation here is a plain skill, not a belief system and not a way of feeling calm on demand. You sit, you put attention somewhere, it leaves, you notice that it left, you bring it back. That last part is the whole exercise. Everything else is scenery.
Almost everything useful in this work starts with being able to notice what is actually happening in you. Without that, counseling becomes an hour of well-argued reporting about a person you are describing from memory.
It is also the reason the practice comes first among the five. It is the ground the others stand on.
In a Session
Five to ten minutes, when it serves the work.
I begin every session with conversation, taking time to meet and hear from you. When it serves the work, I lead a short guided practice, usually five to ten minutes. You do not need experience, a cushion, or any particular posture, and nothing about it requires you to have opinions about consciousness.
What it does is change what the rest of the session is made of. You arrive out of the day, the nervous system comes down a little, and the material that surfaces is closer to the truth than the version you had prepared on the drive home.
Some people dislike it at first, usually the ones who most need it. That is worth saying out loud rather than tolerating quietly, and we adjust the practice to the person.
Between Sessions
Short and daily beats long and occasional.
The practice that transfers is small: a few minutes, most days, in a place you already sit. People who attempt forty minutes on a Sunday and nothing else tend to conclude they cannot meditate, which is a conclusion about scheduling rather than capacity.
The discomfort in the early weeks is normal and predictable. A mind accustomed to constant occupation objects to being asked to stop, and the objection is loud before it is boring, and boring before it is useful.
You are not aiming for a blank mind. You are aiming for the moment of noticing, which is trainable and which nobody can do for you.
Why It Matters
Meditation is the gym.
Meditation is the gym and mindfulness is the sport. What you build sitting still is spent in a meeting, a marriage, a hard Tuesday morning. The sitting is not the point. It is the training that makes the rest possible.
It is also the practice that makes slower work safe. In trauma work particularly, being able to settle and return is what allows anything difficult to be approached at all.
You do not complete this. You build it, and then it is yours.
