Specialties

What a real change of direction asks of you.

The cost of holding a demanding life together for a long time. Burnout is not a scheduling problem, and it does not resolve on a long weekend.

What It Looks Like

Still functioning, running on fumes.

The output has not dropped yet. That is usually what delays the conversation by a year or two. What has dropped is the margin: no reserve for the unexpected, no patience left at home for people who deserve better, no interest in the parts of the work you used to like.

Cynicism arrives quietly and passes for realism. Sunday evening starts earlier each week. Rest stops restoring anything, which is disorienting, because rest was supposed to be the solution and now it is not working either.

Then there are the transitions, which sometimes cause the burnout and sometimes follow it. A promotion into a role that does not suit you. A practice you built and now resent. Children leaving. A body that no longer does what your career assumed it would.

How We Work

The arrangement, not the calendar.

We start by looking at what you are actually holding, out loud, in detail. Most people have never listed it. Seeing the whole load in one place is often the first honest moment in the process, and it usually explains the exhaustion better than any diagnosis would.

Then we look at what keeps you holding it: the standards you set at thirty and never revisited, the identity that depends on being the person who copes, the cost of being the one who could always be relied on.

The practical side is real. I begin every session with conversation, taking time to meet and hear from you. When it helps, we use a short guided practice so that you can watch your own thinking rather than be swept along by it, and much of the between-session work is about restoring a nervous system that has been in gear for years.

What Changes

Direction, not just recovery.

Recovery alone tends to return people to the arrangement that exhausted them, so we do not stop there. We look at what the next stretch is actually for, and what you would have to give up in order to have it.

Change of direction is expensive in ways people underestimate. Income, status, the good opinion of colleagues, a self-image you have carried for decades. I will not romanticize that. What I will do is make sure you are choosing with the full price visible.

Some people leave. Some people stay and hold the same life completely differently. Both are real results and I have no preference between them.

Practical

How the work runs.

Sessions are 60 minutes by secure video, anywhere in North Carolina, which suits people whose schedules cannot absorb a commute. Most begin weekly. Availability is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Adults 18 and over, most between 30 and 75, many of them in business, the professions, the trades, the arts and sport.

I do not treat addictions or eating disorders, and if either is the primary concern I will refer you to a specialist rather than treat it as a stress problem.
