Specialties

The low hum underneath a competent exterior.

Chronic vigilance, racing thought, thin sleep. We work with the thinking and with the nervous system underneath it, rather than only one of the two.

What It Looks Like

Nobody around you can see it.

From the outside you are the reliable one. Deadlines met, family held together, decisions made. Inside there is a running commentary that never quite stops, a scan of the room for what might go wrong, and a body that has been braced for so long it has forgotten it is bracing.

It shows up as thin sleep. Waking at three and rehearsing tomorrow. A jaw or a shoulder that will not release. Irritability that arrives faster than it used to. The sense that if you set any of it down for a moment the whole structure would slide.

Anxiety is not a character flaw and it is not something to argue yourself out of. It is a nervous system doing a job it was given a long time ago and has never been told it can stop.

How We Work

Two directions at once.

One direction is cognitive and practical. We look at the thinking itself: the predictions, the standards, the private rules you obey without having agreed to them. Naming a pattern out loud tends to reduce its authority, which is unglamorous and reliably useful.

The other direction is the body. I begin every session with conversation, taking time to meet and hear from you. When it helps, we use a short guided practice, five to ten minutes, so that you can watch your own thinking rather than be carried off by it. Then I will often ask where something lands physically before we discuss what it means, because an anxious mind can explain itself all day without changing anything.

Between sessions the work is small and repeatable rather than heroic. Meditation is the gym and mindfulness is the sport, and anxiety responds well to being taken seriously in both places.

What Changes

The volume, then the grip.

The first thing most people notice is not that the anxiety is gone but that there is a gap between the thought and the reaction to it. The gap is where everything else becomes possible. It usually widens with practice rather than with insight alone.

Sleep often improves before anything else does. So does the recovery time after a hard conversation. People describe getting an hour back at the end of the day that used to be spent bracing for the next one.

I make no promises about outcomes and I will not tell you this is quick. What I can say is that these are trainable capacities, and that people who practice them tend to keep them.

Practical

How the work runs.

Sessions are 60 minutes by secure video, anywhere in North Carolina. Most people begin weekly and adjust. I work with adults 18 and over, most of them between 30 and 75. Availability is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

I am not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, call or text 988, call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room.

I do not treat addictions or eating disorders, and if either is the primary concern I will refer you to a specialist rather than work around it.
