Specialties

When your worth depends on how well you perform.

Identity can become organized around usefulness, approval, achievement, or a role that no longer fits. Counseling can examine the rules underneath that arrangement.

What It Looks Like

Competence that never feels convincing.

Low self-esteem is not always visible as shyness or self-criticism. It can look like relentless competence, careful preparation, difficulty receiving praise, or a need to remain useful so that your place in a relationship never feels uncertain.

You may rely on external evidence and still be unable to keep it. A success brings relief for an hour before the standard moves. A mistake feels more truthful than years of capable work. Approval matters intensely and is difficult to trust when it arrives.

Identity can also become unsettled when a role changes. Retirement, illness, divorce, career transition, children leaving home, or a creative life shifting direction can remove the familiar answer to who you are. The question underneath may be older than the event.

Where the Rules Begin

A self is shaped in relationship.

People develop ideas about worth through families, communities, work, culture, and the responses they receive when they need something. Some learn that achievement brings closeness. Others learn to remain undemanding, agreeable, exceptional, or invisible.

These strategies may have been intelligent responses to an earlier environment. They can later become rigid rules: do not disappoint, do not depend, do not take up space, do not stop producing. A rule can feel like personality when it has been practiced for decades.

We do not need to blame every difficulty on the past. We do need enough context to understand why a familiar pattern has authority. That understanding can make the present choice more visible without pretending change is simple or immediate.

How We Work

Curiosity instead of another self-improvement project.

Cognitive work helps identify assumptions that turn a performance, relationship, or opinion into a verdict on the self. Self-inquiry asks who benefits from the standard and whether it expresses a value you still choose.

Mindfulness and attention to the body bring us closer to the moment self-doubt occurs. You may notice collapse, bracing, urgency, or a wish to disappear before the familiar thought forms. That sequence gives the conversation something concrete to follow.

The purpose is not constant confidence or a collection of positive statements you do not believe. It is a more honest relationship with strengths, limits, needs, choices, and roles, without making any one of them carry the entire meaning of your life.

That may include noticing whose approval still carries unusual weight, which comparisons leave you diminished, and what becomes possible when a choice reflects your values rather than an effort to secure your place. The questions remain grounded in daily life.

Practical Details

Counseling by secure video.

I bring 50 years of clinical practice. Sessions last 60 minutes and cost $180. Appointments are offered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and scheduling takes place through Headway.

I am licensed in North Carolina only. You must be physically in North Carolina during every session. This practice is telehealth only, with no office, street address, local phone, or in-person identity counseling.

I do not treat addictions or eating disorders. If either is primary, I refer to specialized care. The consultation gives us a brief, practical way to discuss what brings you, how I work, and whether the conversation feels like a reasonable fit.
