Hickory, North Carolina

Work, identity, and life beyond the metros.

Telehealth counseling for Hickory adults whose lives are shaped by skilled trades, manufacturing, foothills communities, and a strong instinct to handle things themselves.

A Region of Its Own

Life here is not a smaller version of a metro.

Hickory sits in the foothills with its own industrial history, work culture, and relationship to the communities around it. Charlotte and Asheville may shape the broader map, but daily life here is not defined by either one. Families, trades, churches, factories, and long-standing local ties create a region with its own sense of pace and responsibility.

That independence can make it easy to value self-reliance above nearly everything else. You may be accustomed to solving practical problems, keeping your word, and getting through difficult seasons without saying much about their cost. Those capacities matter. They can also leave little language for experiences that do not respond to effort alone.

Therapy is a place to bring what cannot be repaired by working harder. You do not have to abandon directness or practicality to examine grief, anxiety, anger, or a life that has begun to feel too narrow.

Making Things Well

Skilled work carries pride and pressure.

Furniture production has long shaped Hickory, while newer fiber-optic and manufacturing work has added different technical demands. In skilled trades and production settings, competence is visible. A piece fits or it does not. A line runs or it stops. That clarity can be satisfying, but it can also make emotional uncertainty feel especially frustrating.

When you are used to fixing concrete problems, a strained relationship or persistent depression may feel like a personal failure of method. There may be no obvious part to replace and no single procedure that restores things. Irritability often grows where helplessness has had no acceptable place to go.

Counseling slows the problem down without turning it vague. You can pay attention to patterns, name what happens before a reaction, and understand what a familiar response protects. That is careful work, even when the result is not immediate.

Change in Work and Body

The role you know may not stay available forever.

Physical work, shift schedules, changing production demands, and economic uncertainty can reshape a career over time. A body that once carried long hours may begin to set limits. A trade that organized your identity may change through automation, relocation, or management decisions made elsewhere.

Those changes can bring grief that is rarely named as grief. They can also affect a partnership, finances, sleep, and your sense of usefulness. If work has been the clearest answer to who you are, a transition can feel like a question with no familiar vocabulary.

Therapy makes room for the full meaning of that change. It can help you separate worth from output while still honoring the pride you take in doing something well.

Statewide Telehealth

A private hour without leaving the region.

James Revels, MA, LCMHC, has worked with adults across fifty years of clinical practice. His practice is online only, with no Hickory office or in-person location. You meet by secure video from a private place while physically present in North Carolina.

Sessions last 60 minutes and cost $180. Appointments are offered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and are booked through Headway. Because James holds a North Carolina license only, sessions cannot take place while you are outside the state.

This is not a crisis service. In immediate danger, call or text 988, call 911, or visit the nearest emergency room. If addiction or an eating disorder is your primary concern, James will refer you to a specialist.
