Durham, North Carolina

Room to pause in a city that keeps changing.

Telehealth counseling for Durham adults living with the pace of medicine, biotech, academic work, and a city whose changes can feel both hopeful and disorienting.

Demanding Work

A mind trained to solve can still become tired.

Durham is shaped in part by Duke, medical work, laboratories, biotechnology, and the many people whose days unfold around research and care. These settings ask for precision. They can also ask you to carry uncertainty without showing much of it. The next patient, experiment, review, or deadline arrives whether the previous one has settled inside you or not.

You may be very good at the work and still find that it follows you home. A difficult outcome remains in the body. A research problem loops through the evening. The part of you that can analyze almost anything begins trying to analyze exhaustion, grief, or loneliness in the same way, but understanding the mechanism does not always loosen its grip.

Therapy creates a different kind of attention. You do not have to produce an answer quickly. There is room to notice what the pace has cost, what you have adapted to without choosing, and what needs more than another explanation.

Belonging Here

Change is lived differently depending on when you arrived.

Durham has changed quickly. For long-time residents, familiar streets and institutions can feel altered by forces that are both close and hard to influence. A place can still be home while becoming less recognizable. That experience may bring grief, anger, protectiveness, or a complicated sense of being left behind in the place where you stayed.

For people who arrived through Duke, biotech, medicine, or another new opportunity, belonging can carry a different uncertainty. Work may have brought you here before community had time to form. You can feel grateful for the move and still miss the people who knew you before your current role. It takes time for a city to become more than the setting around a job.

Neither experience needs to be reduced to a simple story about growth. Therapy can hold the mixed version: attachment and frustration, possibility and loss, the wish to feel at home and the knowledge that home itself is changing.

How the Work Feels

Less urgency, more honest attention.

James Revels, MA, LCMHC, brings fifty years of clinical practice to work with adults across North Carolina. Sessions are collaborative and unhurried. Depending on what you bring, the hour may include cognitive work, mindfulness, attention to bodily response, or direct conversation about a pattern that has become difficult to see from inside it.

You do not need to have the concern categorized before you begin. Anxiety and burnout often travel together. Grief can sit beneath irritability. A relationship difficulty may be tied to work that consumes the attention once available at home. The point is not to force the experience into one label, but to understand its shape closely enough that something different becomes possible.

The practice is telehealth only. There is no office in Durham and no local address to reach. If you are physically located in North Carolina, you can meet by secure video from a private place without adding travel or parking to the hour.

The Details

A consistent session, booked through Headway.

Sessions are 60 minutes and cost $180. Appointments are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Booking and scheduling take place through Headway. James is licensed in North Carolina only, so you need to be in North Carolina at the time of the session.

A useful telehealth hour still needs a boundary around it. Choose a place where you can speak privately, allow a few minutes before and after when possible, and treat the time as something other than another call squeezed between tasks.

This is not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, call or text 988, call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room. James does not treat addictions or eating disorders; when either is the primary concern, he will refer you to a specialist.
