Chapel Hill, North Carolina

# When achievement is simply the water you swim in.

Telehealth counseling for Chapel Hill adults, graduate students, and faculty whose daily life is organized around a university that rarely stops asking for more.

A University Town

## UNC is not just nearby. For many people, it is the whole context.

Chapel Hill is small enough that the university's rhythms shape the rest of the town. Semesters mark time more clearly than seasons do. Conversations at a coffee shop or a grocery store checkout line can drift toward departments, publications, or funding without anyone intending it. If you work at UNC, study there, or simply live in its orbit, it can be difficult to find a version of daily life that is not somehow in reference to it.

That closeness has real benefits. It also means there is rarely a clean boundary between where the institution ends and where your own life begins. A hard week in the lab, the classroom, or the department meeting does not stay contained there. It follows you home, into your evenings, into how you talk to the people who love you.

Therapy can offer a place that is not organized around the university at all. The hour does not care about your output. It is simply about you, considered apart from what you are producing.

Graduate Students and Faculty

## The work that never quite has a finish line.

Graduate work and academic careers share a particular structure: the goalposts move. A defended proposal leads to years of research. A completed dissertation leads to a job search. Tenure, once achieved, opens onto the next set of expectations. There is rarely a moment where the work says, clearly, that you have done enough.

This can produce a strange kind of fatigue, one that does not always look like burnout from the outside because you may still be functioning, publishing, teaching, or advising. The tiredness lives underneath the competence. You can be well regarded in your field and still feel, privately, that you are barely keeping pace with what is expected of you.

Isolation compounds this. Graduate students often work independently for long stretches, accountable mostly to an advisor and a set of internalized standards. Faculty can carry similar isolation once the structure of coursework falls away. Therapy offers a different kind of company: someone who is paying attention to your experience rather than to your progress.

Achievement as the Air You Breathe

## When effort becomes identity, rest can feel like risk.

In a place organized so thoroughly around intellectual achievement, it is easy for accomplishment to become the main measure of self-worth without ever deciding that on purpose. Grades, acceptances, publications, and titles start to function as evidence of whether you are enough, rather than as facts about your work. Under that arrangement, a setback does not feel like a setback. It feels like a verdict.

People who grew up excelling, in Chapel Hill or elsewhere, sometimes arrive at adulthood without much practice at being ordinary. Rest can feel unearned. A mediocre draft can feel unbearable. An unanswered email can trigger disproportionate dread, because so much of your sense of stability has been tied to staying ahead of expectations.

Therapy is a place to examine that arrangement rather than simply perform inside it. This does not mean abandoning ambition or the standards that brought you here. It means loosening the equation between what you produce and who you are, so that a difficult season does not threaten your entire sense of self.

How Sessions Work

## A steady hour, away from the pace of the semester.

James Revels, MA, LCMHC, brings fifty years of clinical practice to work with adults across North Carolina. Sessions are 60 minutes and cost $180, offered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and booked through Headway. Depending on what you bring, the work may include cognitive approaches, mindfulness, attention to the body, or direct conversation about a pattern you have trouble seeing from inside it.

The practice is telehealth only. There is no office in Chapel Hill and no address to visit. James is licensed in North Carolina only, so you need to be physically located in the state during your session. Many people find it useful to schedule between classes, meetings, or lab hours, closing the laptop for one hour that belongs entirely to them.

This is not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, call or text 988, call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room. James does not treat addictions or eating disorders; when either is the primary concern, he will refer you to a specialist.
