Separation, death, retirement, the end of a career or an identity. Grief is not a problem with a solution, and treating it as one is most of what goes wrong.

What It Looks Like

## Loss is wider than bereavement.

A death, plainly. But also a marriage that ended, a body that changed, a career that finished on someone else's schedule, a company you sold, a role you filled so thoroughly that its ending removed the outline of who you were.

Grief rarely behaves. It skips a week and returns on an ordinary Wednesday over something trivial. It arrives out of order, sideways, in the supermarket. People often believe this means they are doing it incorrectly. They are not.

The people around you usually offer about six weeks of patience for something that does not run on that clock, so a good deal of grief gets carried privately and quietly, long after the condolences stop.

How We Work

## Company, and no schedule.

First, you get to say the whole thing out loud to someone who will not flinch, redirect you, or reach for consolation before you have finished the sentence. That sounds modest. In practice it is a substantial part of the work.

Then we look at what the loss is doing structurally: what it took with it, what it exposed that was already fragile, what you have quietly reorganized your life around avoiding. Sometimes that is psychodynamic work with older losses this one has woken up.

The body carries grief, so we work there too. I will often ask you to notice where something lands physically before we talk about what it means. And I will not move faster than you have said yes to.

What Changes

## It gets carried differently.

Nothing here restores what was lost, and I will not pretend otherwise. What tends to change is the weight distribution. The waves come no less honestly but they stop knocking you over, and the days between them widen.

People often find they can speak about the person or the life that ended without the conversation costing them the rest of the afternoon. Some find that creative work becomes the place the grief finally has somewhere to go.

Fifty years of sitting with this has taught me not to predict a timeline. Grief takes what it takes, and being told otherwise adds shame to sorrow, which helps nobody.

Practical

## How the work runs.

Sessions are 60 minutes by secure video, anywhere in North Carolina. Most people begin weekly and adjust as the work settles. Adults 18 and over, most between 30 and 75.
