The Five Core Pillars

# Daily Mindfulness & Self-Monitoring

Attention you can carry out of the room, into a meeting, a marriage, a hard Tuesday morning. Meditation is the gym; mindfulness is the sport.

What It Is

## The same skill, in motion.

Mindfulness is what meditation is for. The capacity you build sitting still gets spent in the middle of ordinary life, at the moment your jaw tightens in a negotiation or your voice changes in an argument you have had before.

It is not serenity, and it is not detachment. You will still be annoyed, frightened, tired and wrong. The difference is that you notice while it is happening rather than an hour afterwards in the car.

That noticing creates a gap between the event and the reaction to it. Almost every practical change people make in this work happens inside that gap.

It is also the least mystical thing in this practice. You are training an ordinary faculty that you already use, badly, under pressure, and you are training it deliberately instead of leaving it to chance.

In a Session

## Where does that land in the body.

This is the question I ask most often. Not what does it mean, but where does it land. Chest, throat, stomach, the back of the neck. The body usually knows first, and it is considerably less rehearsed than the story you have prepared.

So a session moves between the two. You talk, we notice, we slow down at the point where something shifted, and then we look at what was actually happening there rather than at your summary of it.

People are often surprised by how much information they had been walking past for years. A tightening they had filed under posture. A flatness in the voice that shows up whenever a particular name is mentioned.

In Ordinary Life

## Small, unglamorous, repeatable.

The practice outside the room is not elaborate. One conscious breath before you answer. Noticing the second cup of coffee is a decision. Catching the moment a Sunday evening starts to tip.

It works because it is available everywhere and costs nothing, and because repetition rather than intensity is what makes it stick. This is the practice most likely to survive a busy quarter, which is exactly when it matters.

It responds well to being taken seriously.

Why It Matters

## The skill you keep.

Counseling ends. What you want to be left holding is not a set of insights about yourself from a particular year of your life, but a capacity you can still use in a decade.

Mindfulness is the clearest example of that. It is trainable, it belongs to you, and it does not require me to be in the room.

You do not complete it. You build it, and then it is yours.
